The delivery-craft capability check

The qualifications confirm you can describe a project. This checks whether you can finish one. Nine questions on the craft that actually wins jobs early, buffer, the live programme, collaboration, recovery, give you an honest read on where you stand. It takes three minutes, nothing is stored, and the same check works whether you are scoring yourself or your team.

1. The buffer. Do you build a real, protected buffer in preconstruction?*

Yes, 5 to 10 per cent, won early and defended.

Some slack, but hidden inside tasks.

2. The live programme. How do you run it?*

Live in the meeting, on the screen, re-sequenced with the supply chain.

Updated in the office, monthly.

Largely as issued at the start.

3. Building the plan. Where does the programme come from?*

Built with the key trades and designers in the room.

I draft it, then share it for comment.

It is handed down for people to follow.

4. Short-term planning. Who owns the six-week lookahead?*

The people doing the work, reviewed daily, measured weekly.

The site team, loosely.

There is no real short-term plan.

5. Recovery. Could you recover a late job without turning it into a fight?*

Yes. I have done it, by rebuilding the plan with the trades.

Probably, but it would get adversarial.

I would reach for the contract.

6. Design and statutory. Are gateways, CDP packages and utilities on the critical path?*

Yes, procured early and tracked like any trade, with named owners.

Some of them.

They tend to surface late.

7. Commercial. Can you connect the programme to the cost and value story?*

Yes, time and money tell the same story on my jobs.

Roughly. The QS owns that side.

Not really.

8. Leading people. Teacher or teller?*

Teacher. Real areas of ownership, down to trainees.

A bit of both.

I tend to hold it all and direct.

9. The truth. Do people bring you bad news early?*

Yes. The supply chain comes to me first.

Some of it, eventually.

Problems tend to stay hidden until they surface.
